The Kitten Foster Program was started by a handful of volunteers in 2001 in an attempt to save the lives of cats under 8 weeks of age. Because of the great care required for such little ones, the shelter previously had no choice but to euthanize unwanted kittens. However, the kitten foster program and a handful of volunteers changed all that! Our program has grown and we have rescued over 1,100 kittens to date.

Additional volunteers are desperately needed.

We need people who are willing to commit to caring for one or more kittens until they become ready for adoption. The majority of stray kittens brought into the shelter are between 4 and 8 weeks of age. We do, however, rescue kittens as young as one-day old and require people who have schedules that allow them to bottle feed these tiny newborns. THIS MEANS 24 HOUR CARE!

Responsibilities include bottle feeding, cleaning and nurturing and socializing young kittens. All expenses for food and medical care are paid for by the Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter.

We also care for feral kittens up to 3 months old and are looking for people with the special skills required to socialize these wilder cats.

Kitten fostering is a highly fulfilling, yet challenging, activity for those who participate. Without our Foster Program kittens found in our city would not have a future. You too can make a difference by participating in our wonderful program. If you feel you are up to the challenge, please contact our Kitten Foster Volunteer Coordinator, Terri Strum at (818) 760-4298 or terri@basv.org. A volunteer application must be filled out and approved prior to acceptance.

Meet some former foster kittens, all adopted successfully!
